Humanitarian assistance desperately needed as hundreds of thousands face the bitter cold
Islamic Relief has provided over £5 million
worth of assistance to the people of Syria since April 2012. We have
delivered humanitarian aid inside Syria and across the refugee camps in
neighbouring Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey.
Refugees are expected to face grave challenges during the
winter season in Syria as many of them are unable to afford warm clothes
and winter provisions. IR winterization projects will focus on the
distribution of food, blankets, heating devices, newborn kits, medical
aid and cash assistance.
Inside Syria
IR is focusing on the growing medical crisis inside Syria. Medical supplies are severely low - while 59% of public hospitals have been damaged or destroyed - leaving wounded Syrians without access to medical care.
IR provided over 100 types of disposables for operating theatres, first aid and Intensive Care Units. These were delivered to 30 hospitals and 60 medical points. Though Islamic Relief has spent £700,000 to date on medical aid inside Syria, funds for medical aid are still desperately needed.
Lebanon
Islamic Relief has identified that winter needs and shelter continue to
be critical, especially for those refugees residing in the Al-Bekaa
area. IR will provide shelter units in Bekaa Casa, Northern Casa,
Southern Casa, Mount Lebanon, Tyr and Beirut. IR will provide medical
aid in these areas including payment for surgical operations and medical
equipment.
We continue to provide ongoing food supplies and other provisions consisting of blankets, mattresses, baby milk, nappies, baby products and other provisions.
With children being the most fragile in the conflict, Islamic Relief is providing continued psychosocial support. We recently held two carnivals in Wadi Khaled and Al Bekaa respectively in which foods and toys were distributed to young boys and girls.
Jordan
Islamic Relief is assisting a number of families with aid. 1500 households recently received winter provisions - heaters, blankets, pillows and mattresses. IR plans to assist another 850 families towards their winterization needs.
1500 families are currently being provided with basic food supplies, hygiene kits, and cash assistance towards rent in Al-Ramtha and Mafraq. We have partnered with the World Food Programme to provide food vouchers to benefit 25,000 refugees.
Our medical assistance in Jordan continues - amounting to £530,000 of primary health care - while we are covering Syrian children’s basic medical needs with over-the-counter medicines.
Iraq
Islamic Relief in participation with UNHCR, the World Food Programme and UNICEF is coordinating the response to the emergency with other humanitarian stakeholders. In Domiz camp, we provided 10,000 people with food, and will provide a further 20,000 by the end of the year. We will be assisting up to 60,000 individuals with basic food supplies in north and centre of Iraq.
In partnership with UNHCR, IR is managing a refugee camp in western Iraq which is housing over 3000 individuals. We are providing food supplies, clean water, primary and secondary education, access to healthcare, and covering other refugee needs. Islamic Relief is also working with the UNCHR to manage a refugee camp in western Iraq, and another in northern Iraq.
While we have been able to provide humanitarian aid to thousands of Syrian people, there is much more we can do. Please continue to help us in supporting the people of Syria.
