Mohammed, a farmer who
fled his farm when violence broke out in his village in West Darfur,
has lost this year’s harvest. At this time of year, he would be
preparing his land to plant crops, but now he is living in a straw hut
on the Sudan-Chad border, unable to return home.
“The plantation season has just started. If we go home tomorrow then
we will be in time to catch the crop, but we can’t go because it’s too
dangerous,” he told Anwar Khan from Islamic Relief’s USA office.
Sadly,
Mohammed realises he will almost certainly lose this year’s harvest. As
a farmer, he has no other source of income and doesn’t know how he will
survive the year ahead.
There are a million civilians like Mohammed who have fled the Darfur
crisis, losing not only their homes, but their livelihoods as well.
Islamic Relief has launched a £750,000 emergency appeal to help people like Mohammed. Please help us to reach this target.
