Pupils of Qifu - Wang’s Story
09 September 2008
9 year old Wang Ying
Nine year-old Wang Ying was in her classroom preparing for her next class when the earthquake struck. The room began shaking and files began to fall down around her. Thankfully a teacher arrived and shouted for her to get out of the building.
Before the earthquake Wang’s parents worked part-time in construction and her grandparents ran a farm. They grew cabbage, celery, garlic and gourds and sold the produce.
The family’s home and farm was destroyed in the earthquake and the family now sleep in a tent. They don’t know how long it will be before they can move.
“We have to live with many people together. It is very hot. Life is not as good as before,” says Wang.
Wang was unable to return to school after the earthquake as the building was declared too dangerous.
“Islamic Relief built a temporary school for us. If they were not here to help us we would have no place to study,” Wang says.
