Islamic Relief (IR) is appealing for donations after the alert level is raised in the Gaza Strip.
Two years ago, about 1,300 people died and more than 5,000 were injured in Gaza during the war. 40,000 people were displaced from their homes and over 20,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed.
In recent weeks, tensions have been rising in the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians are bracing themselves for a repeat of the conflict two years ago, after several air strikes and incursions. On Wednesday, administration officials in the Gaza Strip evacuated ministerial buildings over fears of another war.
Islamic Relief started distributing aid just hours after the 2008-2009 War started, and continued to offer humanitarian support throughout its 22-day span. During the height of the conflict, IR distributed emergency food, medical aid, blankets and other critical basics.
Since then, Islamic Relief has supplied medical equipment to intensive care units at hospitals, as well as hearing aids, prosthetic limbs and psychosocial support to survivors of the war, many of them children.
After the war ended, over a fifth of Gaza’s water wells were no longer functioning and over half did not work properly. In addition to constructing a new water network in the Gaza Strip, Islamic has dug and rehabilitated water wells and provided coastal schools with clean drinking water, improving access to water for over 120,000 people.
Over the last two years Islamic Relief has also repaired damaged schools, equipping them with libraries, science laboratories, technology rooms and IT training facilities.
As the alert level has been raised, Islamic Relief is appealing for donations for their Gaza emergency fund.
