Syrian refugee living in Jordan
28 February 2012

Imad Abu Hamza and Son

38 years old, has two children (Mohammed 5 years old and Amina 3 years old). He arrived with his wife and children from Dera, Syria in November 2011. They arrived in Jordan illegally, their passport and ID was confiscated by Ramtha Governate (a Governate in Jordan near the Syrian / Jordan border).

Imad Abu Hamza was a nautical engineer in his native country; he worked on ships and traveled as far as field as Georgia and USA. He was also an activist in Syria and this made him vulnerable. Fearing for his life he hid in the valley for 7 months until he was threatened that if he didn’t surrender the family was threatened. This forced him to flee Syria with his family. For three days, they roamed between the border and Ramtha. Their house, car and possessions in Dera has been destroyed.

Although he and his family feel safer in Jordan, they are still facing difficulties. The family live in a two bed house that is sparsely furnished. They don’t have many possessions apart from some items donated by local Jordanians. The family sleep under two blankets in one room as they cannot afford to heat the rooms.  The ceiling in the one story house is leaking water. He uses a long sponge contraption to wipe the excess water from the ceiling. He cannot afford to move to a better location.

Imad suffers from stomach ulcers and his wife is one month pregnant.  Until recently, he worked in a local supermarket for 5 JD (6 USD) per day but this is not enough for him to cover his living expenses. The Governers in Jordan have allowed Syrian refugees to work. House rental is 100 JD and utilities is 50 JD per  month

Islamic Relief is assisting recent arrivals such as Imad through a local NGO called Kitab wa Sunnah. Imad receives 145 JD for one month from Islamic Relief via Kitab wa Sunnah. This helps to cover the rental for one month and cost of kerosene. He also received a monthly food parcel.
