Around 230 people have been killed, two hundred injured and over 15,000 made homeless after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Pakistan.

The earthquake struck close to the city of Quetta in the province of Balochistan in south-west Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday October 29 2008.

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and poor infrastructure and roads blocked by landslides mean that the death toll is likely to rise significantly.

Local hospitals are desperately trying to cope with the vast numbers of injured survivors and army and paramilitary troops are helping with the rescue operation.

The earthquake is the worst to hit the country since the 2005 disaster which left over 73,000 dead in north-west Pakistan in October 2005.
