Monsoon rains have disrupted the lives of up to a million people across three districts in the south west of Bangladesh. Flooding in the districts of Jessore, Satkhira and Khulna has left homes and farmland waterlogged since August.

At the height of the disaster, tens of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes as water levels surpassed previous highs.

Nearly three months later, there are still people sheltering on main roads in Jessore.

Waterlogged

The floods caused damage to infrastructure, including the electricity supply and communications network, and left the affected population without access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

Many people are refusing to leave their homes

The floods affected electricity supplies and communication networks, and the sanitation facilities.

The three districts are not normally prone to flooding, but without adequate drainage the land has become waterlogged.

Many people are refusing to leave their homes for fear of losing their land and belongings even though the flood water may take another two to three months to recede.

The immediate needs are food and non-food items, emergency shelter, latrines and the installation of tube wells to access clean water.

IR Action

An emergency team from Islamic Relief's Bangladesh office has distributed aid worth £145,000 which included hygiene kits and family sized food packs.

The distributions benefited 3,000 families and took place in Monirampur and Keshobpur in the district of Jessore.
