At least three aftershocks were felt between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon (GMT)
A very strong earth quake of 8.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck on Wednesday 11th April near Banda Aceh in Indonesia at 8:38 GMT today. At least three aftershocks were felt between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon (GMT). Information about casualties has not been forthcoming as yet.
Islamic Relief’s staff on the ground in Banda Aceh, Meulaboh and West Sumatra are currently monitoring the situation. The epicentre of the earthquake is located nearby Islamic Relief Indonesia project areas. IR staff members are continuously monitoring the situation and will carry out need assessment for any relief efforts, if required.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday said that authorities would remain "vigilant". UNOCHA have said that so far, no significant damage has been reported and that a tsunami has not occurred as of this moment, although some areas have suffered electricity outages.
