ISLAMIC RELIEF PRESS RELEASE
5000 Litres of Fresh Water in Gloucestershire

27/07/07

Islamic Relief yesterday distributed 5000 litres of water in Gloucester and surrounding areas. The team worked in association with the Muslim Community and local council distributing water to hospitals, nursing homes and community centres.

  Jehangir Malik:
Islamic Relief is at present monitoring the situation and working with the local authorities to ascertain the need on the ground and act accordingly.

Emergency services have been working around the clock to ensure that as many people as possible are reached and provided with clean water especially the disabled and elderly as up to 350, 000 people are affected. Currently the water has been used for human consumption due to the limited supply; the next challenge facing the local authorities is the matter of sanitation.

Jehangir Malik
UK Acting Manager of Islamic Relief

A number of locals have stated that reminiscences of the Second World War have resurfaced as they have had to ration and line up to access water. Jehangir Malik the UK Acting Manager of Islamic Relief said “I have been to different regions of the world, such as Africa and Asia with Islamic Relief for water provisions. I never imagined that I would be doing so within the UK”. Islamic Relief is at present monitoring the situation and working with the local authorities to ascertain the need on the ground and act accordingly.

Residents have been facing their predicament with grace, patience and commendable unity and express their gratitude to the emergency services and volunteers. Mr. Mahmood Patel chair of the Barton and Tredworth Community Trust thanked Islamic Relief on behalf of the community and has asked for additional assistance as persistent rain is more than likely to cause further flooding.

Islamic Relief wishes to extend their appreciation to Cllr. Sonia Louise whom overlooked and coordinated the distribution, Mr. Mahmood Patel and the unsung heroes in the local community and volunteers for their support and continuous efforts.
