WAQF / Health Waqf

Health Waqf

In many developing countries, people continue to suffer from disease and health problems due to the lack of medication, healthcare facilities and health education.

  • 17 million people die each year from curable infections and parasitic diseases.
  • In South Asia approximately a third of newborn babies are underweight.
  • In sub-Saharan Africa there is only one doctor for every 18,000 people compared with 390 in industrial countries

Islamic Relief is currently implementing Integrated Health and Nutrition Projects in many countries around the world. The projects aim to provide information and advice about health related issues affecting the communities.

The programmes also ensure that communities are actively involved in all aspects of the projects - this encourages participation and ensures sustainability.

Particular emphasis is given to the most vulnerable groups - the elderly, women and children.

Some examples of health care projects include:

  • Mother and Child Health Care, Bangladesh & Sudan
  • Medical Care for Disabled People, Bosnia
  • Healthcare Programme, Chechnya
  • Prevention of Blindness, Pakistan

Ways to join in

The following illustration (using a fictional character) is an example of how people can get involved.

Abdullah is a 23-year old computer operator from XYZ City who heard about the Waqf scheme from a friend. He telephoned Islamic Relief to find out more. Having saved for many months to buy a car, he was so impressed with the idea of benefiting the needy for years to come that he changed his plans. He decided that participating in the Waqf scheme would be more beneficial for him in the long-term. He telephoned Islamic Relief's donations department, and was able to make full payment for a single Health Waqf share using his credit card.
