Annual Report and Summary Financial Statements 2007

Islamic Relief Worldwide and subsidiary undertakings

Islamic Relief works to relieve the suffering of the world’s poorest people by providing emergency relief and supporting sustainable development. During 2007 we continued to meet these aims by providing humanitarian aid to those affected by conflict in Iraq, Somalia, Darfur and the Occupied Palestinian Territories amongst others. We also responded to natural disasters in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sudan, and continued to meet the needs of those affected by the tsunami in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

In 2007 we also continued to work towards the aims of Millennium Development Goals by helping to reduce poverty and increase access to basic services in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Annual Report 2006

Islamic Relief Worldwide

At the heart of all of Islamic Relief’s work is the commitment to meet the needs of those who we work with, by providing lasting, sustainable change in poor communities. In 2006 we developed this work further whilst also emerging as a leading light in the global humanitarian community.

As well as being a year of crises and emergencies, 2006 was also a year of re-development and new life. Throughout this year we worked tirelessly in the areas hit by the tsunami and the south Asia earthquake, helping people to make long-term changes, whether this was by providing permanent housing, or the means to make a living.

Islamic Relief Worldwide

One billion people around the world live on less than $1 a day and cannot afford to feed themselves or their families. In some of the world’s poorest countries, as many as 25 per cent of children aged under five are malnourished. Although the total number of people living in poverty has fallen, the very poorest communities
continue to sink deeper and deeper into deprivation. Such extreme poverty often means they do not have adequate access to clean water, health care or education facilities.

Tackling severe poverty and hunger is at the core of all of Islamic Relief’s work around the world.

Islamic Relief was able to respond to these situations quickly and effectively, providing relief and hope to many of those affected.

In Afghanistan, where years of conflict have devastated the country’s infrastructure, Islamic Relief has been helping the Afghan people rebuild their lives.
