What is Islamic Relief?


IR Worldwide was established in Birmingham in 1984. IR HQ staff are from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and 80% live locally. Employees use their diverse skills to support a worldwide team of staff and many volunteers who work in international emergency relief and on development programmes in several countries. IR also owns a subsidiary company based in Saltley, Birmingham UK, which employs 50 staff in the clothes recycling business.

Name: Dr Mohamed Ashmawey

Title: Chief Executive Officer

Dr Mohamed Ashmawey joined Islamic Relief Worldwide as Chief Executive Officer in early 2012 following a tenure as CEO of IR USA. His many years of corporate and business management expertise in process re-engineering, process enhancement, efficiency and organisational restructuring is helping to adapt the way IRW works across the world. Dr Ashmawey received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1988, where he continued as a visiting professor. From 2001, Dr Ashmawey led the Egypt operations of Electronic Data Systems, a 140,000-employee Global IT services company. His clients included ABN Amro, Black & Veatch, Sara Lee, and General Motors. Dr Ashmawey also served on the boards of Mercy International and the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), and was president of the Muslim Arab Youth Association from 1993 to 1998. Dr Ashmawey is married with four children and is fluent in English and Arabic.
