Islamic Relief Hilal's World
Information for Parents

Whether playing games, chatting with friends or doing school homework, your children are likely to spend ever more time online as they get older.

www.hilalsworld.com is an interactive website designed to engage children through enjoyable online activities aimed at developing social conscience and awareness of those less fortunate than themselves.

Your child can choose from several online activities including games, stories, puzzles and facts centred on the work that Islamic Relief does, our mission and the needs of those who are affected by poverty.

In some cases your child will also be able to submit drawings and even take part in competitions and quizzes.

Who is Hilal?

Hilal is a character designed by Islamic Relief to help children relate to and understand the concepts of charity, good morals and to create an awareness of tackling global poverty. Using Hilal we can help educate, inform and nurture more responsible and aware adults of the future.

Hilal is a penny who travels around the world in his Penny Box visiting and helping the poor and needy. His adventures are both fun and educational, as they teach children about orphans and the needy and how to be socially and morally aware.

What can parents do?

Many of the themes and subjects covered by this website contain elements of humanitarian principle that are well known within Islam and the wider world. By talking to your child about these, you can foster greater interest and learning.

Children learn all the time, not just at school.

You can help your child get the most out of this website by actively taking interest in their online tasks and activities, and praising them when they successfully complete them. This will instill a sense of achievement and help set the foundation for greater awareness of the causes of poverty.

Will my child need to submit personal information?

In some cases your child may need to submit some personal information online. In such cases we will ask your child to seek parental permission before submitting any personal information. We treat all personal information confidentially and will not share it with anyone. For more information please see our privacy policy.

We take privacy and security very seriously. To help us keep your child safe, please take your child through our online safety tips below before you allow them to use the internet.

TIPS FOR SAFE SURFING

NEVER:

  • Never give out your personal details
Never tell anyone your home address, telephone number, email address or mobile phone number. Don't even tell them your real name or which school you go to.
  • Never meet in real life
It's not safe, no matter how long you have been friends with them online.
  • Never talk to people who make you feel uncomfortable
If someone says things to you that you don't like or makes you feel uncomfortable, just leave the website you are on - one mouse click and you're out of there!

ALWAYS:

  • Always tell your parents or guardians what you are doing
By telling them where you are hanging out online - and perhaps even showing them - you will put their minds at rest.
  • Always call for help if you need to
Some websites have an emergency help button - don't be afraid to use it. If you do not know how to deal with anything online, always consult your parents or an adult.
