Shelter Support to IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) in Central Iraq

Project Overview

The project was carried out in consultation with the local council and a local association helped select suitable IDPs

Construction began in October 2007 and was finished by December 2007.

Thirty extensions were built onto the host families’ houses by constructing one room and a toilet facility. An agreement was reached between host families and IDPs ensuring that the families will stay for at least one year.

Problem / Project Background

Over 1.6 million people are estimated to be displaced within Iraq, with a further 2 million living as refugees overseas.

Of the targeted IDP families 19 are living with host families in degraded and overcrowded houses. The remaining 11 cases are living in makeshift shacks or concrete frames next to the houses of the host families.

Project Objectives

  • To improve the living conditions of IDPs
  • To improve the sanitation facilities of IDPs

Project Activities

  • Constructing 30 extensions comprising one room plus toilet facilities
  • Carrying out wiring work in order to provide electricity
  • Involving the IDP families in the construction process

Beneficiaries

The project benefited 30 IDP families (around 200 individuals). The majority of the families are female-headed.
