Improving Al Shifa Maternity Hospital

Project Overview

The project began in January 2007 and ended in March 2008. IR provided Al Shifa Maternity Hospital with the equipment necessary to bring the hospital up-to-date.

Problem / Project Background

There are only three Maternity and Delivery (MD) departments in the Gaza Strip; one in Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city, one in Naser Hospital in Khan Younis and the third in The Europe Hospital in Rafah. The MD department in Al Shifa hospital has to cover patients from Gaza city, the middle camps and the North areas. High risk cases in the southern areas are also often transferred to Al Shifa. Due to the recent tightening of borders patients from further a field are now using Al Shifa, as people are no longer able to pay for private maternity clinics. This has put an added strain on the already stretched hospital.

Project Objectives

  • Provide Al Shifa Maternity Hospital with the required equipment.
  • Help Al Shifa Maternity Hospital to provide better services for women.
  • Improve women's health in Palestine.
