Real Lives

A Home for Toula

Toula is 13 years old, and is studying for her exams.

She lives with her grandmother in Tourchawane village, in the Timbuktu region of Mali.

Toula and her class mates are given a 4kg container of flour if they complete at least 80% attendance at school.

The flour is provided by the World Food Programme, and distributed by Islamic Relief through its school canteens project.

Toula spoke to Islamic Relief staff about her life, and hopes for the future:

"My father is dead, and I am separated from my mother as she married another man and left me with my two little sisters to live with him.

I come from a very poor family, which does not have the means to supply me with my school supplies each year.

In fact the teachers supply me with the materials from their own resources. I do love the school, and I go there to learn how to read and write - I'm good at French and maths.

Today I'm not attending the school as we are given a day off to prepare for our exams which will be on the day after tomorrow.

When I finish school I would like to start my own business and make enough money to construct my own house and a small hut."
