Problem
/ Project Background
The North Kordofan State is within a semi-desert area,
which has a population of approximately 883, 833. It is a
culturally and ethnically homogenous area with most of the
people involved in some kind of agricultural based work.
The state suffers from long periods of drought resulting in
a way of life that has become accustomed to poverty, disease
and water shortages.
Expenditure on education in Sudan is at the
minimum. Overcrowded and ill- equipped classes lead to high
percentages of school dropout. In migrant communities education
facilities are either poor or unavailable.
The Adult Literacy Classes are aimed at providing
the adult population in the suburbs of El Obeid with basic
Arabic reading and writing skills since Arabic is the main
language there. The target of the program is to attract predominantly
illiterate adult women.
Project
Goal
To provide disadvantaged children including
disabled children with skills and opportunities.
Project
Objectives
Aims at assisting those illiterate
adults by providing them with lessons on basic reading and
writing skills allowing them to play a more active part in
their daily routine and allowing them to pursue other careers.
1.
Support efforts in reducing the adult literacy rate of the
country
2. Give illiterate adult women a chance to
learn and study as a right
3. Instil greater confidence and assertiveness
in adults for dealing with bureaucratic and procedural matters

Project
Activities
The adult literacy course curriculum consists of
Arabic Language, Mathematics and Religious Studies. The
length of the courses range from 14-19 months and on average
each sessions lasts about an hour.
The sessions are conducted by skilled teachers
who ensure that the lessons are highly participatory and
allow the students to express their views in an open environment.
The teachers themselves undergo training and are constantly
monitored to ensure that goals and objectives are being
met.
Successful completion of the course allows the
candidates to receive a certificate, which they are then able
to present to potential employees when applying for jobs to
show that they have reached a competent level of literacy.
After each course has been completed, there
is usually a follow-up session, which ensures that the candidates
are still on track and determines if they need any further
assistance.
Beneficiaries
The project has been ongoing for a number of years
and has approx. 80-90 women per year
