Aid for Sri Lanka and Indonesia
Islamic Relief has allocated €1,400,000
to bring emergency aid to the survivors of
a disaster that has claimed 124,000 lives
at the latest count. Islamic Relief is now
appealing for €14 million
from the general public as the emergency intervention
gathers pace.
Islamic Relief staff are already in Aceh,
the worst hit area of Indonesia, and in the
Ampara province of Sri Lanka.
Indonesia
Islamic Relief staff have established a field
office in the worst hit area, Banda Aceh,
and another in the more accessible area of
Medan.
IR
staff report that Banda Aceh is completely
paralysed, infrastructure has been destroyed,
and communications are down. The journey between
Banda Aceh and Medan takes more than 5 hours
by car, and 17 hours by truck.
Drinking water, oil, food, disinfectants and
baby milk being distributed to survivors of
the disaster, who are also provided with cooked
meals.
A cargo plane carrying 72 tonnes of Aid is
leaving from Islamic Relief's US office on
January 1, 2005. Islamic Relief's France office
is also preparing a cargo load of aid for
Indonesia.
Sri Lanka
Islamic Relief staff are now in the Ampara
province on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka
which was badly hit by the tsunamis, and are
distributing hygiene kits consisting of soap,
sanitary towels, mosquito repellent, candles,
matches and disinfectant.
Two plane-loads of aid are due to leave for
Sri Lanka carrying aid shipments from IR's
France and US offices.
Sri Lanka's agricultural ministry has appealed
for more candles, mosquito repellent, children's
clothing, blankets, mats and sheets, but the
lack of infrastructure is impeding the work
of the aid agencies.
Meetings are underway with UNICEF and other
NGOs to coordinate the relief effort in the
area.
The survivors of this disaster are
entirely reliant on help from aid agencies
and the international community, please donate
generously.
