Lack of medical services – Baker’s story

Widower Baker Hussain Al Ghoul, aged 40, lives in Al Sheik Redwan in northern Gaza. Baker has seven children. He lost his wife in October 2007. She suffered from Cancer and could not leave Gaza for treatment due to border closures.

Baker himself suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes which prevent him from working. He cannot afford to buy medicine for his conditions and there is little available anyway.

“I have no source of income to cover my family’s needs. I used to sell sweets to school children and earn 10 NIS ($3) a day; now I am a sick man and I haven’t worked for a couple of years. My family is totally dependent on humanitarian aid, such as that of Islamic Relief, and local social affairs aid. Without this help I would die with my family,” Baker says.
