Jafferi and Adrian Sutton were in Zarka –
in the ‘free zone’ between Syria
and Jordan – when three trucks carrying
120 tonnes of aid arrived from the United
Arab Emirates.
The convoy had made the 3000 kilometre journey
in 10 days and arrived to cheers from Islamic
Relief staff who were waiting to greet them
on their arrival. The trucks were loaded with
tents, blankets, medical supplies, hurricane
lanterns and clothes. After a day spent arranging
receipt of the goods and organising a warehouse
within the free zone, the supplies were eventually
unloaded and stored ready for shipment to
areas of greatest need.
The drivers of the trucks proudly showed off
their vehicles which had been their homes
for the past ten days and spoke of the long
and tiring journey they had undertaken on
behalf of Islamic Relief.

“This is just a small thing we have
been able to do for our brothers and sisters
who are suffering in Iraq,” said Ahmed
Darweesh.
Mohammed Allaa, Country Director of Chechnya,
was asked to co-ordinate relief efforts
from Jordan and was able to bring his vast
expertise in aid delivery to this current
crisis.
The relief goods will be transferred to
Iraq as soon as the security situation improves,
allowing aid workers safe movement across
the border.
