Floods cripple large parts of Bangladesh

People killed

At least 130 people have been killed in Bangladesh and around 20 million have been affected as large swathes of the country have become submerged by water.

The latest floods to hit the country have been triggered by heavy monsoon rains and the upsurge of water from border hills.  The North Eastern, North Western, Central and Southern parts of the country have all been inundated with rain water.

Situation expected to worsen

At the time of writing, it is expected that water in the main river tributary will continue to rise; further threatening the already precarious situation.  Some rivers are reported to have crossed danger levels several times, whilst many others have already burst their banks.

Infrastructure collapsing

Vegetables and crops have also been damaged.  Sanitation facilities are breaking-down and clean drinking water is becoming inaccessible.  This has provided a breeding ground for water borne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and skin complaints.

Some areas in the north east – Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Mohongonj, Kjaliajuri, Pogla and Koilati are expected to be submerged.

Islamic Relief active on the ground

Islamic Relief Bangladesh’s volunteers are active in the field and are playing a key role in co-ordinating with the local administration and rescuing the affected people.

Help needed NOW!

Islamic Relief Bangladesh would like to mobilise its emergency response team, but with no funding available for an immediate intervention, it is planning for when money is made available.

There is an urgent need for dry food, drinking water, rescue equipment (boats), temporary shelters and hygiene kits.

Please don’t leave these people crying helplessly.
