Tens of thousands left homeless by heavy rains in Northern Sudan

Heavy rains during the month of July have left tens of thousands of people homeless in Northern Sudan. According to assessments, 36,000 families spread throughout 10 states have been affected, and may affect many thousands more as the rainy season continues over the next few months.

Islamic Relief is on the ground

Islamic Relief is set up to help in the particularly badly affected State of North Kordofan.  It is the area most battered by the rains with an estimated 12,200 families affected.  Islamic Relief is also already on the ground there, managing other relief and development projects.

If our donors are especially generous however, Islamic Relief will look to provide assistance in other areas too.

Cases of water-borne diseases and malaria increasing

The hygiene situation in North Kordofan is alarming, with 76% of the population left without a latrine. Water related diseases and malaria have been reported and are expected to increase. Medical facilities have been completely destroyed in some areas.  Lives have been destroyed!

Crops destroyed; livestock lost

The majority of the people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. The effect of the floods has therefore been particularly devastating with all crops destroyed, and livestock lost.  The population have therefore been left with meagre food supplies at best.

Urgent help needed!

The population is in urgent need of food, medicine and non-food items such as household utensils, pots, buckets, empty sacks, clothing’s, tents, blankets, plastic sheets, sleeping mats, soap, insecticides and mosquito nets.

Global chaos

Sudan is not the only area affected; Pakistan, Bangladesh and the UK are all also suffering from the effects of heavy rains and flooding.

People are counting on us to help, so please give generously so that we can not only help people through this emergency, but also rebuild lives once the waters have subsided.
