ISLAMIC RELIEF PRESS RELEASE Scotland donates £40,400 to Islamic Relief’s aid effort in Bangladesh 10/01/08
On 1st December 2007, donors in Scotland generously donated over £40,000 towards the aid and reconstruction effort in Bangladesh.
Generous donors
Islamic Relief (IR) needs to raise £2 million to continue its emergency relief and recovery projects in the areas of Bangladesh worst hit by last November's Cyclone Sidr.
The money would allow IR to help around 10,000 families by providing them with access to shelter, water and sanitation facilities, education and health services, child welfare and orphan sponsorship, psychosocial support and reforestation.
150 donors went to the ‘Village in the Park’ restaurant to participate in this important event. Potential donors have always enthusiastically and generously participated in fundraising events, and this was no exception. The entertainment and fundraising were both fantastically enjoyable for all, and culminated in an amazing total raised.
Organised by volunteers
A noteworthy difference in this event was that it was conceived of and organised entirely by volunteers in Glasgow. Feeling that they had to do something, they got up and made a difference. As a result of their efforts, many people in Bangladesh will have been given hope to counter their despair.

The delegation called for greater awareness and financial assistance for Darfur from Muslim countries as well the British Muslim communities.

You too could organise a fundraising dinner like the volunteers above! A sister in Birmingham has been organising for a group of sisters to climb Mount Snowdon in Wales for the last two years. She again is a volunteer and has donated her time to Islamic Relief in the hope that she can make a difference – and she really has!

Perhaps you have a completely original idea to raise money for charity. Islamic Relief would love to hear from anyone like this. If the idea could work, Islamic Relief would give the go ahead and let you organise the event and provide you with any support you may need to make the event a success; God willing.
