Re-organisation of Islamic Relief and potential impact on GIFT AID claims

Since we were founded in 1984, Islamic Relief has experienced phenomenal growth reflected
in the fact that today we are now working to alleviate poverty in 25 countries worldwide.
In light of this growth, the trustees of Islamic Relief have decided to undertake a restructuring exercise. This will mean that in the future the Islamic Relief family in the UK will comprise of three separate legal entities.
- Islamic Relief Worldwide with a charity registration number 328158 and company number 2365572
- Islamic Relief UK with a charity registration number 1112111 and company number 5483053
- TIC international which is not a registered charity but is a company registered with companies house in London.

On some of our recent publicity material the new Islamic Relief UK charity number has been used instead of the charity number of Islamic Relief Worldwide. This has caused some problems for our Gift Aid donations.
When they make a donation many of our donors sign a Gift Aid form. If you are a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid means you can increase the value of your donation by allowing Islamic Relief to reclaim the tax on your gift. Most of the Gift Aid forms that our donors have signed have been for the benefit of Islamic Relief Worldwide.
By using the charity number of Islamic Relief UK, Her Majesty’s Customs and Revenue regarded donations as going to Islamic Relief UK rather than Islamic Relief Worldwide as was intended.
On 6 June 2007 we met with officers from Her Majesty’s Customs and Revenue who agreed to honour Gift Aid claims for donations made under either charity number. The Charity Commission has also been informed of this situation.
This situation has not affected the donations given by our supporters. The Gift Aid has now been claimed and has been used for its intended purpose.
In the future the functions of the three separate entities of Islamic Relief in the UK will be:
- Islamic Relief Worldwide will be responsible for receiving funds from our funding partners, in areas and in countries where we do not have a presence, organising and arranging development and emergency projects, managing field offices, representing the Islamic Relief family in the international sphere with other NGO’s, Governments and non-national Governmental organisations such as the EC and the UN, assisting our funding partners in safeguarding the reputation of Islamic Relief and other such similar duties.
- Islamic Relief UK will be primarily responsible for fundraising in the UK, organising events and awareness raising amongst supporters and the public.
- TIC International is the wholly owned trading subsidiary of Islamic Relief Worldwide and until recently was primarily involved in managing our clothes recycling project. TIC international is also due to take over the running of our charity shops.
