Islamic Relief Event
Islamic Relief ‘Celebrates Sanctuary’
17/08/07

Refugees! The term strikes resentment in the hearts of many. But refugees too are humans except they have, for one reason or another, been forced from their homes. Should we not help them? Well Islamic Relief thinks so, and enthusiastically joined events in Birmingham and London to promote tolerance towards refugees.

Afghanistan & Chechnya

Mother & Daughter at the Camp

Islamic Relief’s information stall was set up around two major refugee centres: Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Visually demonstrating how the life of a refugee in each of these countries may be like, the aim was to show how often, people have no choice but to move away to build a better life for themselves and for their families.

UK’s proud history of supporting refugees

A visitor shares her feelings

If only one point could have come out of this event, it was this: that refugees are not so by choice, but through events over which they have no control.  We in the West have a social safety net if we fall on hard times, but people in the third world don’t.  We are their safety net, and we must help them.

Muhammad Imran, Development Education Manager at Islamic Relief UK said:

“The aim of this event was to highlight the reality of refugee’s lives; and not the myth.  Refugees lead often miserable lives, forced to scrape an existence from whatever they can find.

This event, held in a prominent location right in the centre of Birmingham, was highly successful in informing the maximum amount of people about the lives of refugees.  It will hopefully motivate people to help”.

40 million refugees and rising

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, some 40 million people in

the world are refugees, and this figure is growing.

They need food, they need shelter, and they need the ability to care for their children.  We can’t provide everything but we must search inside our own humanity and ask what we would do if we were in their position.  Would we not want people to help us?

Islamic Relief is at the forefront of global efforts to assist refugees globally, but can only do so with the generous help of its donors.
