WORLD DEBT
Campaigners ring alarms for change - highlighting the problem of world poverty
19/06/07
On Saturday 2nd June 2007, Islamic Relief took part in a massive rally in Central London and called for action to end global poverty and debt.

Camapigners near Westminster |
10,000 people gathered between Parliament and Lambeth Bridge, where everyone together ‘rung the alarm’ for debt cancellation, trade justice, healthcare, education, water and sanitation for all, and firm plans to prevent catastrophic climate change and to address its impacts.
Carnival atmosphere

Action Against Poverty |
This was a lovely day, with a carnival atmosphere but which had a very serious message. Those gathered portrayed this passionate seriousness in their determination to hold the world’s leaders to account; and to compel them to live up to their promises.
Lives changed and missed opportunities
The promises that have been kept have changed millions of lives; but most are at serious risk of being broken. We need your ongoing help to ensure the G8 deliver on the pledges made in 2005, and take further action to eradicate world poverty.
Ringing the alarm for change

Blowing a Whistle To End Poverty |
At 2.30pm, there was a minutes silence in memory of the suffering of millions around the world; followed swiftly by a raucous fanfare of alarms, whistles, cries and shouting: all reminders to those in power that The World Can’t Wait!
Muhammad Imran, Development Education Manager at Islamic Relief said: “It was great to be there shoulder to shoulder with people from all backgrounds who are concerned about poverty. It would be great to see more Muslims becoming involved in the campaign for these issues which affect all of mankind”
Only one part of the campaign
Though a successful day, the event was only one part of a campaign to force the leaders of the most powerful countries in the world to embark upon a program of change. The campaign needs greater numbers of people to join the already raucous calls for change. Perhaps your voice will be that voice: the one voice that when added to the hundreds of millions of voices worldwide will bring about change.
