Project Overview

The project – which began in January 2008 and will reach completion in December 2009 - was implemented by Islamic Relief and funded by the Qatar Charity, with the support of the relevant water supply department and municipalities. Its two main components are: the construction of boreholes and the introduction of support measures. Communities will be given ownership of the water supply projects and will take care of them once constructed in order to guarantee the sustainability of the facilities.

Project Background

Niger faces severe water restraints, due to poor and uncertain rainfall and scarce or difficult to access water resources. The safe drinking water coverage in Tilaberi is estimated at 50.88% and as such is the lowest nationwide. In some districts of the region water coverage rate barely exceeds 35%. The unreliable availability of safe drinking water has a negative impact on the health of vulnerable groups, especially women and children.

Project Objectives

  • To improve the quality of life of rural communities, especially women and children in Tilaberi.
  • To increase communities access to potable water.
  • To reduce child morbidity and mortality.
  • To reduce the gaps between regional and local areas.
  • To reduce the workload of women and children, by removing the need for water collection.
  • To improve the maintenance of water points and latrines.

    Project Activities

  • Construct 12 hand pump-equipped boreholes in Tilaberi and Tera.
  • Construct one small potable water adduction system in Tera. The adduction will have four fountains.
  • Establish and train eight water point management committees in community water and sanitation facilities management.
  • Train four artisan repairers in Tilaberi and Tera.
  • Train two technician repairers.
  • Establish a monitoring, evaluation and coordination system.
  • Develop and adapt appropriate monitoring tools.
  • Organise a monthly participatory review for the monitoring committee.

    Beneficiaries

The project will benefit 21,800 people in 13 villages in Tilaberi and Tera.

  • Islamic Relief’s Work

"Islamic Relief is striving for a fairer world. Our mission is to help the poor and needy to live sustainable, self-reliant lives within safe and caring communities. Our work is guided and shaped by the core values of accountability, humanitarianism, neutrality and impartiality, inclusiveness, integrity and co-operation, all of which are also integral to the Islamic faith."
Dr Hany El Banna - Founder of Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief was established in 1984 and our unique approach is the result of these many years of hands-on experience.

  • Where possible we adopt a community partnership-based approach; encouraging community involvement, understanding and ownership of projects.
  • We run the majority of our field projects ourselves, giving us direct insight into the problems faced and how best to solve them.
  • We aim to empower those we help in order to achieve sustainable results.
  • Though our emergency response teams are quick to respond to emergencies around the world, we continue to support communities long after the initial media interest has died down.
  • We recruit staff locally to benefit from their local knowledge. This ensures that we are culturally sensitive and allows us to reach communities and areas other organisations cannot.
  • Where necessary we coordinate our work with other reputable aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
