Project Overview

Many Afghanis go through life with little or no education. Where education is available, it is generally of poor quality and compromised by lack of experienced teachers.

In this project, Islamic Relief aims to revitalize, rehabilitate, improve and make functional in Kandahar the primary education infrastructure and system through reconstructing schools, training teachers, preparing manuals and establishing a resource centre

Project Background

Decades of warfare and civil unrest has resulted in the destruction of schools and the quality of teaching associated with the Kandahar Education Directorate.

Islamic Relief proposed a holistic approach to strengthen capacity of the Kandahar Education Directorate in primary education along with essential steps to rehabilitate and respond to the immediate needs of the primary schools.

Project Objectives

To improve the quality of education in southern Afghanistan through a process of providing systematic teachers training manuals to currently serving, informal teachers who have no prior history of teacher training or qualifications

Project Activities

  • New refresher teacher training manuals and resource materials developed which focus on modern teaching techniques

  • 1500 copies of teacher training manuals to be printed and distributed

  • Up to 1300 informal teachers to be provided with a systematic and organized training and manuals

  • Up to 90 master trainers to be trained

  • 74,080 current children to receive better quality of education through more adequately trained teachers (in the future an additional 25,000 to 35,000 newly enrolled students to benefit each year

How Islamic Relief Helps

"Islamic Relief is striving for a fairer world. Our mission is to help the poor and needy to live sustainable, self-reliant lives within safe and caring communities. Our work is guided and shaped by the core values of accountability, humanitarianism, neutrality and impartiality, inclusiveness, integrity and co-operation, all of which are also integral to the Islamic faith."
Dr Hany El Banna - Founder of Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief was established in 1984 and our unique approach is the result of these many years of hands-on experience.

  1. Where possible we adopt a community partnership-based approach; encouraging community involvement, understanding and ownership of projects.
  2. We run the majority of our field projects ourselves, giving us direct insight into the problems faced and how best to solve them.
  3. We aim to empower those we help in order to achieve sustainable results.
  4. Though our emergency response teams are quick to respond to emergencies around the world, we continue to support communities long after the initial media interest has died down.
  5. We recruit staff locally to benefit from their local knowledge. This ensures that we are culturally sensitive and allows us to reach communities and areas other organisations cannot.
  6. Where necessary we coordinate our work with other reputable aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
