Lack of water is a critical development problem in both urban and rural areas across Mali. Eighty-four percent of all diseases in the country are caused by unsafe water.
Around 60% of modern water facilities do not work, leaving more than half of the population with no access to safe drinking water.
Sanitation facilities in Mali are also scarce and only 8% of the population have access to a modern latrine. This has contributed to the spread of disease, which is exacerbated by poor personal hygiene practices.
