Project Overview

The project - which aimed to improve malnutrition rates in four districts of Tilaberi (Tera, Tilaberi, Ouallam and Filingue) - began in January 2007 and reached completion in December 2008. The project consisted of equipping existing therapeutic feeding centres (TFCs) and supplementary feeding centres (SFCs), establishing a regional surveillance system and increasing nutritional awareness among communities and healthcare professionals.

Project Background

Millions of people within Niger are struggling to survive a devastating famine. A destructive combination of drought and local infestation diminished crop yields from the 2004 harvest and created a dangerous snowball effect for future harvest seasons. Although the 2005 harvest was good in some areas, in others (such as the Tilaberi region), it has been a complete failure.

Project Objectives

  • To provide immediate free access to supplementary and therapeutic feeding programmes to malnourished children and their mothers in four districts.
  • To establish an effective regional nutrition surveillance system and increased capacity at the hospital level in Tilaberi region.
  • To provide enhanced nutritional awareness among the population living within the four districts.
  • To enhance access to quality primary healthcare services for children under five years of age and pregnant and lactating women within the area covered by the 31 community health centres in the four health districts.

    Project Activities

  • Equipping and making operational four existing therapeutic feeding centres.
  • Equipping and making operational 34 supplementary feeding centres.
  • Strengthening the capacity of primary healthcare workers to treat malnutrition.
  • Educating communities on the identification and prevention of malnutrition.
  • Establishing and making functional a region nutritional early awareness system.
  • Reinforcing the capacity of 34 community health management committees.
  • Reinforcing the capacity of 34 healthcare workers.

    Beneficiaries

The project benefited communities and healthcare professionals in four districts of Tilaberi regions.

  • How Islamic Relief Helps

"Islamic Relief is striving for a fairer world. Our mission is to help the poor and needy to live sustainable, self-reliant lives within safe and caring communities. Our work is guided and shaped by the core values of accountability, humanitarianism, neutrality and impartiality, inclusiveness, integrity and co-operation, all of which are also integral to the Islamic faith."
Dr Hany El Banna - Founder of Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief was established in 1984 and our unique approach is the result of these many years of hands-on experience.

  • Where possible we adopt a community partnership-based approach; encouraging community involvement, understanding and ownership of projects.
  • We run the majority of our field projects ourselves, giving us direct insight into the problems faced and how best to solve them.
  • We aim to empower those we help in order to achieve sustainable results.
  • Though our emergency response teams are quick to respond to emergencies around the world, we continue to support communities long after the initial media interest has died down.
  • We recruit staff locally to benefit from their local knowledge. This ensures that we are culturally sensitive and allows us to reach communities and areas other organisations cannot.
  • Where necessary we coordinate our work with other reputable aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
