Project Background

In the early hours of Friday 28, 1997 an Earthquake struck the province of Balochistan. The earthquake was measured at 6.2 on the Richter scale. After shocks continued for many days and a total of 70 people were killed and many hundreds injured. Fortunately densely populated areas escaped serious damage otherwise the death toll could have been much higher. The affected areas included SIbbi, Harnai, Loralai, Zob, Mastung, Muslim Bagh, Chaman, Pishin, Kalat as well as the provincial capital Quetta. The worst affected area was Harnai where 50 people were died. Two villages were completely destroyed. 4000- 5000 families were affected by the Earthquake in Hernai region. IRP decided to work in Harnai which was the worst affected area and started its relief distributions.

  • How Islamic Relief Helps

Islamic Relief is an international aid agency that works in over 25 countries worldwide.

Our work covers emergency preparedness, full-scale disaster response, rehabilitation and long-term development projects.

Over the years IR has provided communities with public services, such as water and education. We have now moved towards a ‘rights-based approach’, helping communities to become self-sufficient and encouraging them to expect their governments to provide adequate public services.

IR works in partnership with communities, aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
