(
10 February 2005
)
Geissan school
The long civil war destroyed education in the Blue Nile. Warring parties often used schools as military bases and left them in ruins. IR is building new schools in the Blue Nile and restoring derelict schools.
The bullet-scared walls of Geissan school for girls before IR rehabilitated it. Most schools in the Blue Nile are in poor condition and need extensive renovation.
Geissan School
IR staff with happy pupils of the Geissan school after it had been rehabilitated. After a school has been rebuilt and classes begin, a sense of normality returns to children's lives.
Abgarin School
Pupils of the newly built Abgarin school in the Blue Nile. IR has also built schools in the villages of Bulan and Sabel. The Blue Nile has one of Sudan's lowest levels of education with only a third of its children enrolled onto a primary school.
