Seven year-old Hamdi Mohamed lives with her seventy year-old grandmother Rukia. Hamdi’s father died four years ago and soon after his death, her mother left Hamdi and her two sisters with their grandmother. She never came back for them.
Rukia used to run a small business; selling food items to people in her neighbourhood, but taking care of three small children on her own quickly saw her money run out and forced her business to close. The family was then forced to survive on hand-outs from neighbours.
“When children are crying and you have no food to give them it really hurts. That was the most difficult time I ever passed,” says Rukia.
