When the war in Iraq began in 2003, Palestinian refugees living in the country found themselves facing the threat of persecution. Considered by many to have enjoyed special privileges under the previous regime, they were singled out for attack by militia groups. Many were arrested, physically attacked and forced from their homes; others attempted to flee the country in search of safety in neighbouring Jordan or Syria.
